427 Gallery, Stabu iela 70, Riga

Artists: Roman Himey, Yarema Malashchuk

Low + 427 presents a looped video screening by Ukrainian artists Yarema & Himey and an accompanying music event to fundraise for Ukrainians fleeing their homeland. We will be giving drinks by donation, as well as accepting cash donations toward a local NGO helping Ukrainians in need. Join us in solidarity and celebrate your freedom, while thinking of and supporting those who are losing theirs.

Working at the boundary between visual art and cinema, Ukrainian video art duo Roman Himey and Yarema Malashchuk (Yarema & Himey) work through themes of youth, nostalgia and the Soviet legacy in the Ukraine, often adopting aesthetic references to Soviet fashion and cinema, as well as addressing past trauma and tragedy. Low & 427 present a loop of Yarema & Himey’s award winning work Dedicated to the youth of the world 2 (2019). Roman Himey and Yarema Malashchuk’s films have been screened and exhibited across the EU and in Mexico and Canada. The duo were awarded the main award of the Pinchuk Art Centre Prize (2020), Best Short Documentary at Festival Internacional de Cine Silente, México (2019), and were shortlisted for the Future Generation Art Prize 2021.

Low & 427 are donating any proceeds from this event to “Gribu palīdzēt bēgļiem”*, which, together with other non-governmental organisations and active Latvian citizens, is currently helping to coordinate support and assistance for people from Ukraine who might come to Latvia.
